God
is Light
There is a dark side to liberty. A darkness that arises from those
who abuse their God given liberty and enter into the fallen state of
sin. The Bible calls people who dwell in sin--darkness and those who
are obedient to God--light. For you were formerly darkness, but
now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light
(Ephesians 5:8). God Himself is defined as being, light, and in
Him there is no darkness at all, no variation, or shifting
shadow (I John 1:5 and James 1:17). Sin and the results of sin,
do not find their origin in the light of God, but in spiritual
darkness.
Darkness is not a created thing. It doesn't emanate from a source
like light does. Darkness is the absence of light--like silence is
the absence of sound--or nothing is the absence of something.
Darkness is a state of absence and nonexistence, not substance and
existence. Although darkness seems real, it simply is the absence of
light. So too, is the spiritual darkness of sin. It is the resulting
spiritual state of turning away from the light of God’s truth into
the darkness of falsehood and
lies.
